Seasonal Care Calendar

Follow these seasonal tasks to keep your Pennsylvania garden healthy and beautiful all year long.

Spring

  • Clean up winter debris and dead foliage
  • Prune dormant trees and shrubs before buds break
  • Apply fresh mulch to beds (2-3 inch depth)
  • Divide and transplant perennials
  • Start seeds indoors for summer annuals
  • Fertilize lawns and garden beds with organic compost

Summer

  • Water deeply and less frequently (early morning best)
  • Deadhead spent blooms to encourage reblooming
  • Monitor for pests and treat organically when needed
  • Harvest vegetables regularly to keep plants producing
  • Cut back early-blooming perennials for a second flush
  • Weed regularly before weeds set seed

Fall

  • Plant spring-blooming bulbs before ground freezes
  • Aerate and overseed lawns for thick spring growth
  • Cut back spent perennials (leave some for wildlife)
  • Apply compost and leaf mulch to protect soil
  • Wrap young trees to prevent animal damage
  • Drain and store hoses and irrigation systems

Winter

  • Plan next year's garden layout and order seeds
  • Prune dormant deciduous trees and shrubs
  • Protect tender plants with burlap or frost cloth
  • Check stored bulbs and tubers for rot
  • Service and sharpen garden tools
