Right Plant, Right Place

Going to the nursery and seeing all the plants is exciting and overwhelming at the same time. Which plants will you choose? What will grow and thrive and not take over your space? Does it need sun or shade? Maybe you have deer wandering your property. Will they eat this plant?

There are lots of things to take into consideration when selecting a plant. We call it "Right Plant, Right Place!" All plants will thrive if they are planted in the right conditions.

Here at Gardens of Distinction we only like to use plants that we have witnessed grow and thrive over the years. Below are just a few of our favorites.

Walkers Low Nepeta

Nepeta is one of the hardiest perennials. It does best in full sun. It grows 18" tall and 24" wide on average. It has fragrant foliage and purple blue blooms May into Fall.

May Night Salvia

May Night Salvia produces brilliant blue blooms from May into late Summer. It needs full sun and grows 20" tall and wide.

Matrona Red Sedum

Matrona Red Sedum is a hardy sun loving perennial that grows to 24" tall and wide. It blooms reddish pink blooms in late summer with red stems and leaves tinged in red. It is drought tolerant once established.

Royal Heritage Hellebore

Hellebore is one of our most planted perennials. It fits perfect in so many gardens because it grows in sun or shade and is evergreen. It has unusual flowers that bloom in a wide range of shades from white, pink, red to even green or black. Hellebore is also called Winter Rose because it begins flowering in late winter and lasts until later spring.

Variegated Liriope

Variegated Liriope is a very versatile perennial growing in sun or shade. It has a round mounded habit growing to 18" tall and 24" wide. It has lavender blooms in July. Plant in sun for best flowering results.

Whirling Butterflies Gaura

Butterfly Gaura is a drought tolerant, sun loving hardy perennial. It grows to 3' tall with a whispy habit. Gaura has pink and white blooms in late spring and again in late summer.

Magnus Echinacea

Echinacea also known as Coneflower grows in sun to light shade. It grows to 36" tall and has daisy like pink blooms from May into the fall. Plant in full sun for best flower production.

Feather Reed Grass

This variety of Feather Reed Grass is named Karl Foerster. It is very unique for its slender habit. It does not get large and unruly like other grasses. It grows up to 5' tall and 18" wide. It does well in sun to light shade and has blonde plumes in summer that stay into the fall. It is called "motion grass" because it sways in the slightest breeze.

Blue False Indigo Baptisia

Baptisia is a sun loving, larger growing perennial growing up to 40" tall and wide with a upright habit. It has brilliant blue blooms in early summer that last into mid summer. Drought tolerant once established.

Hameln Dwarf Fountain Grass

Hameln is a true dwarf grass only growing to 30" tall when mature. It prefers full sun but will grow in light shade. It has dark green blades with cream colored plumes in mid summer.

Japanese Painted Fern

Japanese Painted Fern is a hardy fern growing in shade to part shade. Its colorful fronds are a unique shade of purple, green and silver. It grows up to 24" tall at maturity.

Astilbe

Astilbe is a hardy shade to partial shade perennial. Flower production is best if it can be planted where it is protected from afternoon sun. They have vibrant green fern like foliage and fluffy colorful flower plumes in early summer. They come in a variety of colors depending on the variety. Astilbe can grow from 12" to 30" tall depending on the variety.

Midnight Wine Weigelia

Midnight Wine Weigelia is a hardy deciduous summer flowering shrub. It is a true dwarf growing only to 14" tall and 24" wide with a mounded habit. It has burgundy foliage all summer with vibrant pinkish red blooms in June. It turns golden yellow in fall. Wine and Roses Weigelia grows up to 30" if you need a variety that gets larger.

Wintergreen Boxwood

Wintergreen Boxwood is one of the hardiest of the Boxwood varieties and the one I plant the most. It is a very versatile variety meaning it can be planted and trimmed into a hedge or planted as an individual planting. It has a loose open habit growing to 36" and it can easily be kept smaller. It can also be grown in sun or shade. It has lustrous green leaves that stay all season.

Little Lime Hydrangea

Little Lime Hydrangea is a dwarf variety that grows to 36". It has lime colored blooms in August that turn from green to a brilliant white which fades to pink and then burgundy in the fall. It grows best in full sun to light shade. Its blooms are perfect for cutting and drying. It also has a golden orange fall color. It does well with deer but they sometimes nibble on it. If you are looking for a taller variety regular Limelight Hydrangea grows 6 to 8'.

Goldflame Spirea

Goldflame Spirea displays a amazing array of colors from its golden green foliage tinged in burgundy to its pink blooms in late spring and finally in the fall it fades to a reddish orange. It grows to 30" tall and does best in sun or part shade and is very drought tolerant once established. This plant brightens up any landscape.
